This session, led by Brien Brothman, will explore the idea of “the enemy” through a discussion of the French novel Grandir Ailleurs (Growing Up Elsewhere), penned by Faraj Alexandre Rifai, a staunch pro-Israel Franco-Syrian Arab raised to harbor animosity towards Israel. The story follows Fade’s return to his native Syria after a 15-year absence to reconnect with two childhood friends: one Jewish, the other a captivating woman. This quest unravels a journey into a past shrouded in silence. What drove Fadi to persist in uncovering those buried memories?
